How to diagnose your internet connection problem?

First of all , I wanted to state that there are a number of cases to check .
1st , You are not connected properly to the router.
2nd , You are connected properly to the router , but can't access the internet.
3rd, You are connected properly to the router and can access the internet , but the connection is slow.
For the first case, there's simply a utility for the command prompt called " Ping" which checks the reply of the computer IP address to reply without data loss.
How can I access the command prompt?
Simply go to Start menu , then run, type [cmd.] There's a difference in Windows Vista where Run is not accessible via start menu , so you go to start menu , in the search pane , type[run], then type [cmd] , You are now in the command prompt.
Ok, but I don't know how to get the IP address of the router to ping . No problem , type [ipconfig / all] to get the default gateway which is the router's IP address. Type [ ping [IP address of the router] ] , If it pings with no data loss , then you are connected properly to the router. Otherwise , you can restart the router.
For the second case, type [Ping www.yahoo.com] for example , If it works , so You are correctly connected to the internet and your ISP ( internet service provider) has no problem. Otherwise, try another site , this one might be down. If a number of sites are down , so It might be the ISP connection failure.
For the third case , If you are properly connected to the router and can access the internet , but your connection is slow , It might be due to failure in one of the computers of the route, to check this , You have a command-line utility called tracert which is a short for [trace route] , so try to trace the site at which the connection is slow. If you get a lot of astrisk signs (*) on different lines , so It would be the problem .
